Booze, In the News

Decadent Red Wine Hot Chocolate

What are the two greatest indulgences? Wine and chocolate. You can try to argue, but I wouldn’t. These two treats are possibly the greatest gifts to bless the earth.

Since wine is a gift straight from the gods, it makes sense that we have an official day dedicated to red wine alone- and it’s today! Happy Red Wine Day!** If you didn’t know about this holiday, I’m happy to be the one to share the news. You now have, on your calendar, and excuse to drink today (not that you needed one.)

**Now, in all honesty, I just read that Red Wine Day was actually yesterday. This is exceptionally embarrassing. However, I’m going to take this opportunity to declare this entire weekend National Red Wine Weekend. Alert Hallmark! It is law!

This decadent treat is extremely easy to make and has very few ingredients: Milk, Chocolate, Wine, vanilla extract, salt. For the wine, I went with Cabernet Sauvignon. I recommend going with a dry wine for this recipe (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, etc). This drink is extremely rich, and a sweet wine might push it over the top.

Hot Chocolate Ingredients

For the chocolate, I used Ghirardelli’s semi-sweet chocolate chips. Again, I went with semi-sweet to balance out the drink. I would not recommend using milk chocolate chips. Dark and more bitter chocolate pairs better with red wine. Not that this drink is bitter- it’s definitely not.

Now, to make the hot chocolate I melted my chocolate over a double boiler. But let’s be real, I just want to be fancy for you guys. If you don’t have a stove, or you don’t have the patience, that’s not a problem. You can melt this chocolate in the microwave. Just put it in a microwave-safe bowl, microwave it for 30-second intervals and stir in between each round. This will probably take 1 minute to 1 1/2 minutes overall. As soon as it’s melted- stop! Don’t overcook and burn the chocolate.

Double Boiler

Heat the milk over medium to medium-low heat. Don’t let it ever reach a full boil, just a low simmer will do. Add in the melted chocolate and whisk vigorously until it’s fully incorporated and a nice color. Add in the wine, vanilla, and salt. Mix over the heat until the entire drink is warmed through.

Wine into C

Now I’ll warn you, this drink is rich. It’s chocolate and wine, so it makes perfect sense that it is rich. This probably is not a drink you want to have multiple helpings of. Think of this more like a dessert cocktail. It’s sweet and rich and cozy and wonderful.

Curl Up and Enjoy
